Hello all!

Today had a lot of problems in the lab. Broke 2 glasses. One of them had water and was inside the mantle... Probably burned/short circuit it. Letting it dry! We will see.
But those problems were the stimuli to build something I had in my mind for a long time, but never made before. A Venturi Vaccum Device that could be used in distillation, filtration etc.
Just used things that I had around the house to do it, but even if something needs to be bought, the end product will be very very cheap.
I made a PDF so that whoever wants to build one it can do it in an easy way. It's pretty straightforward. Everything is very tight and fit!

I will be testing it tomorrow. I did it with air and it worked, so with water should be pretty sweet. I my case, and to test it I will be connecting it to the water output tube that comes from the condenser. It will be submerged in a water vase. I intend, later on, to put a valve in the tube, to set the vacuum and to avoid any reflux.

All the best;
C.

Love the pdf! Excited to see where it leads 👍

Question. Is this similar to an air trap, or is there another application involved?

I also had that thought, because of the T shape. :) It is similar yes, with some differences.

In this case, no magnets are involved, and the purpose is not to have an output from the side but in fact, an influx of air that will be expelled inside water.
Also, the pen format creates the broken flow (horizontal) and a jet, that will be responsible for the pressure change that pulls the air in. Let's see if my water pump is enough to create the vacuum. I will post the results of the test.

Great work there Christophorus, thanks for sharing.
I once made one too using brass plumbing parts, but your design is way better.
Especially love how all the parts in your design are so cheap and easy to source.

In may case though, I wasn't satisfied with the result and so I later purchased a commercial one.
Only to discover to my dismay that the commercial one didn't perform any better than the ghetto'd one.

What's good about them....
> Maintainence free. (There's no seals to replace)
> Can be used with powerful solvents.
> They pull a low vacuum.

What's not so good...
> Even though they pull low vacuum, they' move less volume than proper vacuum pumps (they're slow).
> Good vacuum requires a powerful jet of water, which makes a bit of noise.
> Have to be careful how you set up your reservoir, otherwise you can get a bit of water splash around the work area.
> pump + water reservoir takes up more lab space than a dedicated vacuum pump.

Also, might I suggest you convert your PDF to a regular post.
As it is right now, it can only be viewed by members of the forum, but I think your design is novel and useful.
I'm sure other netizens who land on this page from web search would also love to see it.

Hello GA.

I did want to make it in the simpler way possible and with materials anyone can have around the house.
I didn't know non-members couldn't see/download PDFs.
The contents of the pdf are found in the images below.

To make it, just cut the materials and place them inside each other.

All the best;
