This is a 16th century German woodcut showing the humble mortal breaking through to the archetypal powers of the Above. This image is one of the most inspiring of all alchemical images, in my humble opinion that is.

It's one that often comes to mind whenever I end up heading into a deep meditative state well outside of normal consciousness. I'll agree as to its power of inspiration, and I can only wish to pilot around in that arcane space beyond the stars.

Though once attributed to the Renaissance, this illustration seems first to have appeared in a late-nineteenth-century meteorology book, written by the French astronomer Camille Flammarion, and intended for a general public readership. Flammarion, for a time apprenticed to an engraver in Paris, may, himself, have produced the picture. - source

The Flammarion engraving is a wood engraving by an unknown artist, so named because its first documented appearance is in Camille Flammarion's 1888 book L'atmosphère: météorologie populaire ("The Atmosphere: Popular Meteorology"). The engraving has often, but erroneously, been referred to as a woodcut. It has been used to represent a supposedly medieval cosmology, including a flat earth bounded by a solid and opaque sky, or firmament, and also as a metaphorical illustration of either the scientific or the mystical quests for knowledge. source

According to Flammarion's book this missionary of the Middle Ages shows that he had found the point where the sky and the Earth touch... but art interpretation depends on the watching party... so I still claim that this is someone that is alive, crawling into the next world to have a peek!
