Here's what I gathered from my reading, as well as some hypothesizes:

1. Alchemy was probably originally internal, in that it the PS was cultivated internally due to making glass and having forges and other such nonsense is complicated.
2. It involved purifying the body and making it a good receptacle for SM/Prana/Odic Force/Orgone/Etc, and cultivating an internal PS.
3. This takes a long time and requires a lot of discipline, as the mental aspect of purity would also have to be mirrored with physical purity.
3. There seems to be grades of attainment. Most schools focus on making the secondary body, but it's kind of shitty to do that and only that. In the case of the Chinese, they call that being "ghost immortal". Conversely, the best way is to bring your body with you in a form of ascension like Jesus or Buddha, which I believe they call the "rainbow immortal body".
4. We see partial completion of the latter state in the bodies of saints and monks, who seem to resist corruption and decay. Taken to the logical extreme, the internal PS would allow for meatbag immortality, and probably a guaranteed creation of the secondary body. However, to ascend beyond would require a huge amount of SM so that the body was converted almost entirely to light (snake eating the tail).
5. However, as I said, this is very difficult, so external alchemy was created, where it mimicked the development of minerals but with flasks and furnaces. This was faster, but the downside is that you have to keep taking it, because you don't have an internal source of SM.
6. Additionally, taking The Elixir alone doesn't guarantee immortality. According to a number of stories, the typical length of life for someone using the external pill is something like 140-200 years. They do age, but exert great stamina and strength.
7. In terms of taking The Stone as an Elixir, I recall reading here on the forums that there's a particular process of fasting while taking herbs and purgatives prior taking The Elixir, and that doing so causes heavy sweating, loss of the top layer of skin, expulsion of impurities, and skin, teeth, and hair falling out. Afterwords, regeneration occurs and the various constituents which were lost grow back. As I recall, if this is performed once every 40 years with supplemental doses of The Elixir, then you'll be able to live indefinitely. Supposedly this was a recipe from the East and part of some RC lore.
8. Similarly, however, it has always been said that The Stone is a medicine for both metals and men, meaning that it transmutes lesser metals to gold and silver, and it also acts a means to prolong life for humans.
9. Thusly, we can infer that The Stone, perhaps, is imparting a great deal of SM into anyone who takes an Elixir, and they then have their material body corrected, much in the same way that metals are "corrected" to gold or silver, whether or not one uses The Red or The White.

Conclusion: The Elixir, as made from The PS, is method of correcting the body via purging impurities and regenerating the body according to whatever "pattern" is the ideal expression of that body. In the case of the human, that means renewed youth. In the case of a metal, that means conversion to gold or silver. Thus, it "cures" both of their afflictions. Such are my conclusions from my reading.
