IMHO orders are no good place to do magick. Magick is about following your own magickal paths. Just because your current grade of the order wants you to learn the Hebrew alphabet and do Kabbalah doesn't mean Kabbalah is the right thing for you at this moment (or ever). As a magician you don't follow the orders of other people, you decide what you do. This is so important, because, as you said @Wildfire, you come to points in your life where you realize you have to change something or to go for a certain magickal practice very concentrated. Doing magick means to be deeply connected to yourself, to your needs, your skills and to the entities who are willing to work together with you. No order, no rules can do this job, too often they inhibit you on your way. That doesn't mean that you can't learn from others or accept their help. You do this out of your own choice and without swearing any (ridiculous) oaths.
@elixirmixer, in my opinion some books of Lon Milo Duquette are quite good and very funny to read. I didn't read them all though.
Much of the communication that takes place is trhough imagery and my own language. I only have to use Enochian language to do rituals. And you're right they aren't easy to handle at all but I never deal with cacodemons. I try to mix planetary and Enochian.
