The host of the forums is ending their hosting so we have to move the forums to a new host. Hopefully this will happen without a hitch. There is a risk any posts made in the coming weeks will not be ”saved” as it depends on the back-up file and when it was made.

I really hope the new tech guys have time to move this, because the current host site gave me ONE WEEK to move the forum and if I do not move it in time, they will delete the back-up and everything will be gone.

So things are very shaky at the moment. Hopefully the new hosts will be able to move the forum and save the back-up and everything.

It would be annoying if, after 15 years, the forum dies not due to war or hacks but bureaucracy.

You can ask them to already make a backup copy of the backup and give you access to it, like upload it on a 3rd party server or something. Just so it doesn't get lost.

The Exodus to Xenforo is complete. There are a bunch of tweeks to be made and some new features. Please be patient.

The blog posts were saved at the bottom of the forums... just "trash them" or move/merge them into another forum section somewhere?

One sad issue: any link made in a post that re-directs to another thread or post is now broken... we just got to live with that.

Logging in from my computer this morning. Site looks great so far.

Although I can't find the Search bar anywhere, for either computer or iPhone view.

There are some new features we can enjoy on this site like the possibility to "upgrade" by paying to achieve perks. We will look into what that could be. We want the forums to be free, but those that want to support and get more "perks" can pay x amounts.

People can also "like" posts... this could be a way to avoid making posts that says "thanks" or "ok"... rather than make a post, just click "like".

The forums can be searched internally now, rather than before using "google".

There are other things, but I am a noob with Xenforo so will take some time to learn. Some things that can be confusing is the language, maybe not that important for all of you, but in terms of administration things have different names which cause confusion... So far I gather this:

PM = Conversation
Forum = Node
User = Member

It most certainly is easier. No more third party image hosting.

But to that point, our “How To” threads will have to be updated.

Most is done now. We (mods and I) are trying to fix the last few details... there are some nice new features we will explain in due time. We are also cleaning the forum a bit (lots of irrelevant threads for example with old platform UI questions and stuff).

Email is not working yet, but as soon as I get it going I will email everyone to let them know the URL of the new site. Before it was forums.alchemyforums and now it is just alchemyforums.com

The only real downside is that links to other threads are broken. We got to live with that... part of the clean-up is to fix this. To go through every thread will take a life time... but we will do as many as we can...

Going through old threads I discovered this is like the 4th or 5th time Alchemy Forums was close to death... with hindsight this one was a close call, because the "fix" was the most complicated.

The Phoenix always rises.

I received another DONATION.

In total saving the forum cost 760 USD including the annual costs of 2023. So far we have received 150 USD in donations. Much appreciated.

Normally the annual cost will be around 125 USD (I think) with hosting fee and url fee. So the migration and buying a new platform license was the expensive thing this year.

Hopefully it won't happen, but in case we will have a high cost in the future (forum hacked or move again) it could be good to have a bit of a buffer. So I will push for donations more than we normally do. We want this forum to belong to us all and I am simply a custodian. In 15+ years we have never made a profit... this forum is running at a loss and the mods work for free (and currently they work a lot for free fixing all the broken links and stuff).

If everyone donates something it becomes a lot together.

I noticed that some members are somehow getting positive votes already, so someone knows how to do this.
